This year’s Show is over and as usual it was a fantastic two days of competition, socializing and friendship. Congratulations to the winners… And more importantly thanks to all the Smiths who weren’t. There’s no Competition without Competitors and we appreciate their hard work and commitment, but as the regulars to the Show know, socializing and banter is the main reason we all turn up every year. With that said, well done to the guys and girls who gave up their Bank Holiday weekend and competed, whether it was for tin cups, cash, a rosette or two or just to prove to themselves that they can do it (the most important win of all in my book!).
2015 shining stars were Remuna Picard with a beautiful, traditionally made fire screen, Richard Bradshaw’s contemporary designed helix Sommelier’s table, West Country Smith Brian Hill’s figurine and an amazing forged flower by Matt Garton in the 90 minute Live Forging Competition. Show newcomer Simon Hall from Devon, won the 20 minute Live Forging with a perfect ‘Wall Hook’ and father & son team Richard & Ben Bradshaw made the 45 minute pairs Live Forging look easy.
The NBCC Static Champion was Remuna Picard with his fire screen and the Reserve Champion was Andrew Hall (Ash Ironworks, Devon) with a marvelous Damascus Sword. The NBCC Live Forging Champion was a relative newcomer to the Show and competition circuit, Matthew Garton who forged welded an intricate stylised flower well within the 90 minute time limit. Yours truly (Nick Bates) won Reserve Champion with a speculative (& very lucky) design.
Detailed list of places will be posted on the E & O website shortly.
Thanks to the judges… Mr Paul Elliot FWCB, proprietor of ‘Hammer & Tongs’ Oxfordshire judged the Static classes and Mr Terrance Clark FWCB cast his wise and critical eye over the Live Classes. E & O Show prides itself on the quality and experience of its chosen Judges, and this year was no different, Terry gave an excellent (positive and constructive) critique of the Live Forging at the prize giving ceremony, with the added bonus of a ‘pitch’ regards to the ‘Ypres 2016′ event planned for June next year; Something we hope that the E & O Competitors and supporters will get involved in.
Further thanks are due to Mr Nigel Whitehead (current Prime Warden WCOB), the ‘Blacksmith’s friend’ Mr Hugh Adams, Mr Ron Denton, Sally Clark.
Thanks to the Sponsors for their continued support and the Show itself for its backing and help.
And finally Thanks to the Committee…. Eric & Jude Lamprell, Dave Harman, Richard & Becky Bradshaw (Ben & Katie too), Callow & Co..
There’s one more Competition Show on the NBCC circuit before we find out who is this years Champion Blacksmith and Live Forging Champion are. Dorset Show is the last show of the year and is held on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September. After that, its slightly less than 8 months of practice and preparation before the new season of Competitions starting with the North Somerset Show on 2nd May 2016! (details at http://www.blacksmithcompetition.wordpress.com as they become available)
In the meantime for your Competition ‘fix’ there is the annual St.Clements Day Forge In on 21 November 2015, National Trust’s Finch Foundry, Sticklepath, Okehampton, Devon, EX20 2NW where there are always fun contests, including the infamous ‘snail race’.
