With just over a month to go before the competition, the Royal Cornwall Show has released its Blacksmith Competition Schedule. The Show is held at Wadebridge and is on Thursday 9th, Friday 10th and Saturday 11the June 2016. 7 Classes in all, to be judged by Richard Bent FWCB

  1. Static Indoor – Any item for indoors use made in the competitor’s workshop using traditional blacksmithing methods.
  1. Static Outdoor – Any article for outdoor use made in the competitor’s workshop using traditional blacksmithing methods.
  1. Static Artistic – Any article produced in the competitor’s workshop of an artistic or sculptural design. Items in this class may use any methods preferred by the maker.
  1. Live Forging – Competitors have two hours to make ‘a Hanging Basket Bracket on a Celtic theme’ using their own tools and materials. Forge, fuel and anvil provided.
  1. Static ‘Functional Item’ – Any functional item produced in the competitor’s workshop. Items in this class may use any methods preferred by the maker.
  1. Live Forging – Competitors have 30mins to make a ‘Saleable item’ using their own tools and materials. Forge, fuel and anvil provided.
  1. Cornish Champion – Open to Cornish Smiths only.

Results from this years first show are in already.

It was a good show with some excellent, quality forgework in the static classes, in particular Rhys Harlin’s gates and Sam Bailey’s Candle stick (seems ridiculous to call it such, as it was much a sculpture as something to give light). Looking forward to the next competition which is Devon County Show in two weeks.
