Somerset Show Blacksmith Competitions 2016

This year the Somerset Show is held on Monday 2nd May 2016 (early May Bank Holiday) and is the first of the ten NBCC Competitions. This years provisional schedule is:

1. Static Indoor
2. Static Outdoor
3. Artistic,
4. Live Forging – 1 1/4 hrs to forge (on the showground) a copy of a sample supplied by the judge (Paul Allen LWCB FWCB). Material, forge, fuel and anvil supplied.

There will be a downloadable schedule and entry form at NSCAS Website closer to the Show date, however I will give you the links here as soon as I receive them.

In the meantime relax and concentrate on making your static pieces because you can’t do any preparation or practice for this years Somerset Live Forging Competition…. just turn up and compete!

This May Bank Holiday the first round of the NBCC Blacksmith Competitions is held at the North Somerset Show 2015 (not 2014 as in the picture… no one has won any 2015 shields yet!)

The next NBCC Competitions after the Somerset Show are at the end of May and are at The Devon Show 21, 22, 23 May.

The Devon Show is at Westpoint, just outside Exeter and where the International Blacksmith Festival was held in 2014. Westpoint Forge is also the home of The Blacksmiths Guild. The official schedule with how to enter etc. will be posted here as soon as it is printed & delivered to me (get a move on Devon Blacksmiths!).

The preliminary competition schedule is:

Class 1 – A traditionally made item made in the competitors workshop with a value less than £250 ex vat

Class 2 – A traditionally made items made in the competitors workshop with no limit on selling price

Class 3 – Any item produced in the competitors workshop of a contemporary design using any methods ( no limit on price)

Class 4 –  Any article produced in the competitors workshop of a sculptural or feature design, (no limit on price)

Class 5 – Any article produced in the competitors workshop for use in Agriculture or Industry (no limit on price)

The live forging classes are:

Class 6 – 2hrs to make a ‘Wine bottle holder’.

Class 7 –  30 mins ‘Crash and Dash’ to make a salable item.

Class 8 –  Time TBA ‘To make a piece to match a sample’.

Class 9 – To design and make  ‘A table candle holder’ This static competition is the ‘Presidents Choice’  (i.e. the winning piece to be judged by the Show President) and the winning entry will be retained by the DCAA and presented to the President as a memento of their time in office.

The Royal Bath & West Show 27th – 30th May 2015

Next schedule up is the Royal Bath & West Show this show is held at Shepton Mallet Showground, Somerset.

The Classes at The Bath & West Show are pretty straightforward with no frills or special requirements. Its a great show generally and very welcoming as a competitor. The prize money at this show is one of the most generous on the NBCC circuit so its definitely worth putting the effort in.

Class entries close 13th May (on line) or until the class is full. The PDF schedule can be downloaded at Bath & West Wrought Ironwork Schedule 2015. This Show’s website allows you to book your entries on line (using the above link)… the system works, so please use it!

The schedule is basically this:

Class WI1-  Any item suitable for display in/around the home focusing upon a Stone Fireplace.
Class WI2 – Any item, any size, for EXTERIOR use.
Class WI3 – LIVE BLACKSMITHING. “Produce any item within the timescale of 90 minutes.” NO STRIKER ALLOWED. Supply own materials.
Class WI4 – LIVE BLACKSMITHING, “Produce something saleable within the timescale of 20 minutes”. Supply own materials.
Class WI5 – LIVE TONG MAKING, Time allowed 45 minutes. Supply own materials.

The Three Counties Show 2015 – 12, 13, 14 June schedule

First of this years (2015) schedules are in. All the info you need is at RTCAS official website last entries are 1st May 2015 or when the classes are full…. yes, they get full, so get in early to avoid disappointment. There are professional and student classes for both Farriers and Blacksmith at the Three Counties Show so read the schedule carefully. There is a separate entry form for Classes R.10 & R.11

The professional Blacksmith classes are:

R.10A Traditional class over £250 in value

R.10B Traditional class under £250 in value

R.11A Contemporary class over £250 in value

R.11B Contemporary class under £250 in value

R.12 Set piece Live Smithing class

R.14 Speed Chain making Live Smithing class

2015 NBCC Competition dates

I hope you are getting ready for a busy new season of Blacksmith Competitions.

I’m writing mid January 2015 so there’s still plenty of time for you to make something for the static competitions. Each Competition Round has classes peculiar to the individual show, but if you base your efforts on 1. Static Traditional design and make class, 2. Static Contemporary design and make class, 3. Live forging.

As the Shows submit their schedules I will post them for you, I’ll also offer some hints to successful competition submissions in a later posts.
