The Devon Show Blacksmith Competitions are held on 17th, 18th and 19th May 2018 at the Westpoint Showground, just outside Exeter, Devon.

Its such a shame this Show is continually giving such short notice of the Competition Schedule. Last year you had 5 weeks to prepare, this year its 2 weeks better at 7 weeks, even then I had to keep checking the Devon County Show website waiting for the schedule to appear. No notification from the show committee, the NBCC or the NBCC website….. come on people get your act together!

Here’s this years schedule:

Class 2 – A traditionally made items made in the competitors workshop with no limit on selling price

Class 3 – Any item produced in the competitors workshop of a contemporary design using any methods ( no limit on price)

Class 4 –  A Sculpture (or Item of sculptural design), produced in the competitors workshop (no limit on price)

Class 5 – Any article produced in the competitors workshop for use in Agriculture or Industry (no limit on price)

The live forging classes are:

Class 6 – 2hrs to make a ‘Can Crusher’  bring your own tools and materials. The crushed can must pass through a 20mm x 75mm slot.

Class 7 –  30 mins ‘Crash and Dash’ to make a salable item, bring your own tools and materials. This class can be entered on the day.

Class 8 –  Time TBA ‘To make a piece to ‘match a sample’ in a specified time.

Class 9 – To design and make  ‘Candle holder‘ This static competition is the ‘Presidents Choice’  (i.e. the winning piece to be judged by the Show President) and the winning entry will be retained by the DCAA and presented to the President as a memento of their time in office.

I have three schedules in already for this year Bath & West, South of England and yours truly Edenbridge & Oxted. I’m pressing hard this year for all the NBCC Shows to give up thier schedule ‘secrets’ well, well before the actual Competition dates so we ALL have a chance to compete and/or attend the Competitions…. watch this space?
