Devon Show competition schedule 18th-20 May

Blacksmith competition, Edenbridge and Oxted Show, Blacksmith, Hand forged, Ironwork, Forge, Wrought Ironwork, Hot Forged, Blacksmithing

The Devon Show Blacksmith Competitions are held for three days at the end of May at the Westpoint Showground, just outside Exeter, Devon.

Considering the Competition is just 5 weeks away and I have certain advantages running this website in acquiring schedules ahead of time…. this one has been a challenge. Thanks to Paul Gilbert for scanning his treasured copy of the schedule. These schedules seem to be as rare as Hen’s teeth and the entry forms are virtually non existent. Something tells me that the Devon Show Blacksmith Competition head of Public Relations needs to buck his ideas up?

With that said I really hope the competitions are a success for the sake of the Smiths who managed to gleen a copy of the schedule and bother to enter.

Here’s what I found:

Class 1 – A traditionally made item made in the competitors workshop with a value less than £250 ex vat

Class 2 – A traditionally made items made in the competitors workshop with no limit on selling price

Class 3 – Any item produced in the competitors workshop of a contemporary design using any methods ( no limit on price)

Class 4 –  Any article produced in the competitors workshop of a sculptural or feature design, (no limit on price)

Class 5 – Any article produced in the competitors workshop for use in Agriculture or Industry (no limit on price)

The live forging classes are:

Class 6 – 2hrs to make any item, bring your own tools and materials.

Class 7 –  30 mins ‘Crash and Dash’ to make a salable item, bring your own tools and materials. This class can be entered on the day.

Class 8 –  Time TBA ‘To make a piece to ‘match a sample’ in a specified time.

Class 9 – To design and make  ‘Something from home‘ This static competition is the ‘Presidents Choice’  (i.e. the winning piece to be judged by the Show President) and the winning entry will be retained by the DCAA and presented to the President as a memento of their time in office.

A copy of the schedule can downloaded from the Edenbridge and Oxted website, https://blacksmithcompetition.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/devon-show-schedule-2017.pdf unfortunately you can’t download one from the Devon Show website itself.

An entry form can be downloaded here https://blacksmithcompetition.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/devon-show-entry-form-2017.pdf

Royal Bath and West Show Blacksmith Competition 2017

Blacksmith competition, Edenbridge and Oxted Show, Blacksmith, Hand forged, Ironwork, Forge, Wrought Ironwork, Hot Forged, Blacksmithing

The Royal Bath and West Show Blacksmith Competitions are held on 31st May to June 3rd this year at the Shepton Mallet Showground and is the second round of the NBCC Championship.

All change at this years B&W Show though. New forge site and new type of competition. The venue remains the same but the Forge site has been moved to the Countryside area, which should give the competitors better access and a different level of public exposure.

The competition is greatly simplified with essentially three classes.

  1. A static free choice class, upon the NBCC championship will be a part of.
    1st £50, 2nd £30, 3rd £20
  2. A 120 minute live forging class to make a ‘floral item’ to be included in NBCC live forging championship. 1st £50, 2nd £30, 3rd £20
  3.  A daily 60 minute live forging competition, where the winner of each day’s work is awarded £25 prize money.
Entry fees when booked in advance are simplified too, a £20 blanket entry fee (incl VAT) for as many entries as you may wish to make in any of the classes…..or a £5 per day fee for the 60 minute live for those of you who left it to late…. I think? Best to check as always with this years Cheif Steward who I believe is Mr Keith Mahoney.
