The Edenbridge & Oxted Show Competition Schedule Sunday 25th & Monday 26th August 2019

Schedule 2019

All entries must be received by 18^th August 2019

Judge for all classes – To be confirmed

£5.00 entry for each class (see entry form for more detail)

Static classes:

A       TRADITIONAL (Any item embracing traditional blacksmith forging and construction techniques** – design can be contemporary or traditional)

B       CONTEMPORARY (Any item made using innovative design and construction)

C       ‘COLOUR’ – Any item where the majority of the work is in Colour(s) other than Black or Grey (Any method of construction.)

D       INDUSTRIAL & AGRICULTURAL (Any method of construction)

E       STUDENT/APPRENTICE CLASS – A pair of tongs (by Hammer and Hand**).

A one off special Cash prize £100 is awarded to the Best Gate in Show (Chosen and presented by the Judge).

 

**The Edenbridge & Oxted Show Blacksmith Competitions encourages and promotes the hot forging of Iron, Steel and other metals. All of the static competition entries (except Class A & E) may use any method of construction, BUT should primarily be designed and made using hot forging techniques. Class A & E is strictly a ‘by Hammer & Hand’ class, thereby encouraging ONLY the use of traditional blacksmith hot forging techniques, design and construction.

Live forging classes:

F       LIVE FORGING COMPETITION– To forge on the showground in 90 minutes ‘Any item using materials from a list’. More details available at https://wp.me/P4HK6q-kz No extra cleaning up time allowed. Winner is awarded the Tommy Tucker perpetual Rose Bowl Trophy and £100 2^nd £50 3^rd £25

G       LIVE PAIRS – To forge on the showground in 45 minutes ‘a pitch fork’. Material supplied by organisers. More details available at https://wp.me/P4HK6q-kD No extra cleaning up time allowed. Winners are awarded the Burrows Lea Forge Pairs Forging Trophy and 2 x 1^st £40, 2 x 2^nd £30, 2 x 3^rd £20

H       LIVE 20 MIN COMPETITION – To forge on the showground in 20 minutes ‘a finished saleable item’. Competitors are to supply own materials. No Striker. No extra cleaning up time is allowed. More than one entry accepted. Finished items will be auctioned for charity either at Show or at later date. £5.00 cash fee per entry and taken on the day. Entries accepted on the day time & space permitting. Winner takes all cash prize.

Blacksmith Competition dates 2019

Look at all these lovely people attending last years Competition…. At Edenbridge and Oxted Blacksmith Competitions we are so lucky to have so many loyal supporters and a fantastic Show committee. All the hard work and planning is rewarded so many times over when I look as these pictures.

So looking forward here are the 2019 Show dates, thankfully unlike last year only two Shows clash and they are pretty much as far West and East as the Shows go. The Edenbridge and Oxted Competition Schedule is nearly ready to publish and has a some exciting changes to the classes… watch this space for updates and schedule postings.

My own 90 minutes of calm and serenity in previous 72 hours mayhem and organisation…… that’s why we do it? Happy place….

A massive, massive THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who took part in this year’s EDENBRIDGE & OXTED BLACKSMITH COMPETITIONS.
Year on year the Competitions are reaching more Smiths and interested parties. The last two days have rewarded our Show committee with our best ever Live Forging attendance which peaked at 14 Smiths.
And over 9 Static and Live classes we had 77 entries with 23 Smiths and Artists attending.
It certainly makes all the hard work worth while, looking forward to seeing you all next year.

2018 Class H 45 minute Live Forging Competition details

H       LIVE PAIRS – To forge on the showground in 45 minutes ‘a re-enactment Pike head’. Material supplied by organisers. No extra cleaning up time allowed.

As a pair  of Smiths, you are required to make ‘a re-inactment Pike head’ on the showground, you will be supplied the exact material sections and lengths that were used to make the sample Pike head. You are to forge as closely as possible a matching Pike head to the one in the photo attached. Any specialist tools will be supplied.

Royal Welsh Show Blacksmith Competitions 23, 24, 25, 26 July 2018

My yearly ritual of first finding….. and gleaning information out of the lengthy English/Welsh Blacksmith Schedule is complete, however double check the download PDF before you enter….. In a nutshell this years competition is this:

An Open Artist Blacksmith Competition –Any item of ironwork made by traditional methods only.

Open Artistic Modern and Figurine Competition – Any item of modern artistic work including figurine.

Open – Any finished article of wrought ironwork £200 and over in value.

Open – Any finished article of wrought ironwork not exceeding £200 in value.

Open Jewelry Competition – Jewelry (please see PDF schedule for more detail).

APPRENTICES OR TRAINEES ONLY Any finished article of wrought ironwork made by Apprentice or Trainee.

WELSH STUDENTS ONLY Competition open to Welsh Students only, though they may be continuing their studies in Technical Institutions outside Wales. An article of ornamental ironwork made during the previous 12 months. Only 2 entries per person.

LIVE FORGING  (STUDENTS OR APPRENTICES) To produce a test piece (apparently information is available on the RWAS website!)

LIVE FORGING (Open to Individual Blacksmiths) – Any article to be made in 90 minutes. Competitors must bring their own materials which must be un-worked.

South of England Blacksmith Competition 7, 8, 9 June 2018

Schedule:

Static Classes:

1. Traditional static (only by hammer, anvil and hand, no modern methods of construction)
2. Contemporary Static (any method of construction)
3. The Camelia Botnar Foundation Cup (Static exhibits by Camelia Botnar students – A pair of hollow bit tongs for 12mm round. Reins to be 12mm round, 400mm long).

Live Classes:

1. Traditional Live – “From the Deep”. 2 hours, no clean up time. Own materials, no preformed stock. 300mm cubed size limit.
2. Peter Begent Award. Rams head poker. 1 hour, no clean up time. 500mm of 12mm square, material supplied.

CLASS ONE – UNDER £250 ex. VAT IN VALUE

Traditional or contemporary, primarily of forged construction (The work should be available for commission at a price not exceeding this value if required.)

CLASS TWO – OVER £250 IN VALUE

Traditional or contemporary, primarily of forged construction

CLASS THREE – ARTISTIC/SCULPTURAL

CLASS FOUR – SHOES AND TONGS 90 MINUTE LIVE FORGING

Open mainly to Farriers (but Blacksmiths can enter too) Competitors are required to make on the Showground a pair of tongs and then use those tongs to forge hunter heeled pony shoes.  No clean up time. A striker is permitted. Please see printed schedule for full details.

Prizes: 1st £50 2nd £35 3rd £25

 

CLASS FIVE – 90 MINUTE LIVE FORGING

Competitors are required to make on the Showground a hanging basket bracket.  A clean up time of 5 minutes is permitted away from fire. A striker is permitted

Prizes: 1st £50 2nd £35 3rd £25

 

CLASS SIX – 20 MINUTE LIVE FORGING

Competitors are required to make on the showground a saleable object in 20 minutes. No clean up time.

Prizes: 1st £50 2nd £35 3rd £25

 

CLASS SEVEN  – STUDENT COMPETITION (Static entry)

CLASS EIGHT – LOCAL MILITARY BLACKSMITHS COMPETITION
