NBCC Judging Seminar 2023

On Saturday 4th March the National Blacksmith Competition Committee are hosting a Judging Seminar, Student & Open Class Live Forging Competitions and general get together at HCT Holme Lacey Campus, Hereford.

Saturday the 4th of March, 8:30am – 4:30pm
The National Blacksmith Competition Committee (NBCC) is hosting a judging seminar at the Rural Crafts Centre, The National School of Blacksmithing, Hereford.
There’s Student and Open (professional blacksmiths) Competition Classes which will be judged by Adrian Legge FWCB LWCB, to explore and inform about the judging process and how points are gained for the National Blacksmith Championship using the NBCC scorecards.

Program of events

  • 08:00 – Introduction by Andrew Waight.
  • 08:30 – Student/ Apprentice Competition commences.
  • 09:30 – Open Competition Commences
  • 11:00 – Lunch (delegates to supply their own food, burger van will be on-site).
  • 12:00 – Seminar opens.
  • 14:00 – Short recess.
  • 14:20 – Seminar continues.
  • 16:00 – Prize giving ceremony.

Live Student/ Apprentice Competition                     To commence at 08:30

  • To produce specified Hoof Pick test piece.
  • Time allowed – 1st year 60 minutes – 2nd year 50 minutes – 3rd year 40 minutes.
  • Photos and drawings of set piece to be made available online in the weeks leading up to the event (enabling students/ apprentices to practice).
  • Solo competition – no striker permitted.
  • Materials needed – made available by the college.
  • Delegates to supply their own standard blacksmiths tools. No power tools allowed.
  • Required tools (Fuller) will be supplied by the college.
  • Cash Prizes – 1st £65; 2nd £45; 3rd £30; 4th £10  

Live Open Competition                                                   To commence at 09:30

  • Any article to be made.
  • Competitors must bring their own materials which must be unworked.
  • Time allowed – 90 minutes.
  • Solo competition – no striker permitted.
  • Delegates to supply their own rivets, flux, and standard blacksmiths tools.
  • No power tools allowed.
  • Cash Prizes – 1st £65; 2nd £45; 3rd £30; 4th £10


Tea, biscuits and refreshments will be provided on site!
